Out On My Travels.
Mood:  happy
Now Playing: The Rain- Missy Elliot
Topic: I'm still on holiday.
Good evening,

I must apologise for the lack of posts over the last few days but I have been out socialising. Yes, people actually want to speak to me again. Hurrah!

On Friday I woke up to the awful discovery that part of my ceiling had fallen in, so spent most of the day harassing my factors. I then had to dash out at half past four to meet my friend and regular reader Alisdair, who had kindly agreed to accompany me to the opening of 'The Philosophers Garden' by Robin Gillanders at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. I'm glad I went and enjoyed it very much. I had hoped to write something intelligent about the exhibition but a waiter kept following me about and giving me free wine in a shameless and ultimately successful attempt to sabotage my brain and note taking ability. I do recall being particularly taken with the composition of several of the pictures and finding one very atmospheric.

We also met two very amusing gentlemen of advanced years who as far as I could make out are spending their twilight years attending art exhibitions and quaffing the free drink. They are an example to us all.

I recommend that you go and have a stoat round Robin's exhibition, which is a treat, and runs until November 2005. I also recommend you have a read at this article about Ian Hamilton Finlay whose garden 'Little Sparta' is the subject of many of the photographs in the exhibition. I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of Mr Hamilton Finlay prior to the exhibition and am completely unfamiliar with his work, however now that he has come to my attention I plan to undertake a bit of research.

Thank you so much for coming to my show and giving it a plug. But I (and my friend Alan) was so much looking forward to meeting you. Why did you not make yourself known? I (and Alan) kept looking out for someone who MIGHT be Clairwil...

Oh and shame on you for not having heard of Ian Hamilton Finlay. I think you would like him. He is 80 years old and one of my students described his work as 'punk rock'. Now I'm not sure I agree with that, but he certainly has always had a healthy disregard for the arts establishment - and any other establishment for that matter. He's also very funny. Sometimes.

Well, I did think about making myself known, but I felt a bit shy. I also had a friend with me and they would have thought I was giving myself airs and graces, if I started swanning about introducing myself to people. However next time you have an exhibition I shall arrive in a name badge.

Yes, I am rather ashamed of my ignorance of Ian Hamilton Finlay but I've heard of him now and expect to be an expert in twelve months time. I like the idea of him.

I know, I wish I'd made myself known now. I can be a total fool sometimes.

Yes, I was quite tickled by the water pistol line. Do the Arts Council deserve a good soaking then?

it's a splendidly derisive put-down. i've no idea if they deserve it or not, but it certainly sounds like fun. i can imagine hamilton-finlay and richard demarco bursting in on one of their interminable meetings armed with these pumped up water-blasters that kids play with, and taking the whole lot of them out like the st valentine's day massacre. preferably filmed on a hand-held camera by jean-luc godard.

Could they also trick the Arts Council into funding the film? I'd find that really funny for some reason.
